FELT - THE BOOK LAUNCH

On Friday 3rd February at 7pm, Rough Trade is playing host to a special one-off event. For the first time since their split Lawrence and other members of seminal indie group Felt will be on stage talking about their 10 year career, a career which saw them make 10 albums in 10 years, making some of the most jaw-droppingly beautiful pop music of the decade.

This event is to celebrate the release of 'Felt - The Book' - a stunning hardback, limited edition book documenting the band's career using exclusive photography from the archives and Lawrence's text. Before the Q&A Paul Kelly will be screening relevant portions of his Lawrence Of Belgravia documentary and then this event will see the band field questions from both the organisers of the book, director of 'Lawrence Of Belgravia' Paul Kelly and members of the audience. After the event the band will be djing their favourite records and signing copies of the book.

The new Rough Trade Shops compilation CD is aimed squarely at the New Year. Shiny, fresh, clean and minimal electronic music in your earphones provide the perfect soundtrack for the cold and frosty early January.

Rough Trade Shops Electronic 01 was released 10 years ago and we are revisiting the theme of our first genre compilation in order to share with you some of our favourite artists who have been utilising technology - as a means to an end - in the last year or so. The hardware / software tangibly present, you can almost hear the1’s and 0’s in the compositions here.

As Rob Young writes in the sleevenotes –“ Check, for instance, Emeralds’ Mark McGuire’s glowing “Alma”, which begins with a hymn; or Nicolas Jaar’s incantatory “Space is Only Noise if You Can See”, like a dubbed-out Depeche Mode. At the other end of the scale, Prurient and Keiji Haino (in tandem with Finnish sub-bass spelunkers Pansonic) use the full throated roar and the abject howl of the avant garde and the hardcore. Meanwhile, compare Rustie’s dense “Hyperthrust”, with its micro-events folded up and crammed into milliseconds, with alva noto’s “uni deform” bitcrush collision, which emerges from the rarefied world of conceptual sound art. Marcus Schmickler, who can occasionally be found making exploratory post-rock as Pluramon, sends your ears down a labyrinth of no return with the abstract operations of “Discordance Axis”, closely followed by Ekoplekz’s hallucinatory tone-scrub, jarring and alienating as an MK-ULTRA mind-control experiment.

In “And The World Laughs With You”, Brainfeeder’s shapeshifting boss Flying Lotus invites Thom Yorke to jack into a cybernautical call and response session. Even the most outwardly conventional track here, Hercules & Love Affair, has its House 4/4 scraped and sandblasted with gravelly patches of digital irritant. Ford & Lopatin’s “Emergency Room” is like some unearthly fusion of Scritti Politti and Heaven 17; John Maus’s swooning portamento synthi-fanfares summon up the Fairlight manoeuvres of The Thompson Twins and Blancmange. Azari & III’s “Manhooker” transports you back to sun-up at some orbital rave at the very close of that strange plastic decade.”

Comprising sound art, dubstep, chill-wave, witch house, electro-pop, digital hip hop, tech-minimalism, electro-house, and metal-machine music, supplied by labels such as editions Mego, Warp, Blastfirstpetite, raster-noton, Type, Skam, Tri Angle and more, RTE11 is selected by the staff at both London shops and is as stylistically-varied as would expect from us.

BLACK POWER MIXTAPE

On Friday 20th January Rough Trade East in association with Soda Pictures will be screening BLACK POWER MIXTAPE.

Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975 is a rare film; so rare that most of the footage spent over 30 years languishing in a Swedish basement until discovered by director Goran Hugo Olsson who put it together with contemporary audio featuring artists like Erykah Badu and Ahmir 'Questlove' Thompson. Olsson created the ultimate mixtape, an artistic statement that charts the rise of the Civil Rights movement.

The Civil Rights movement came about because the people on the ground level made it happen and part of the success of the movement was due to the universal appeal of the music that represented the eternal fight; from Sam Cooke's 'A Change is Gonna Come' through to the image of Aretha Franklin singing at the funeral of Dr Martin Luther King.

Black Power Mixtape shows us the story of Angela Davis who in 1972 was tried and acquitted for her involvement in the murder of a prominent judge; John Lennon and Yoko Ono recorded the song 'Angela' from the album Some Time in New York City and in the same year the Rolling Stones recorded 'Sweet Black Angel' from Exile on Main Street, both songs playing tribute to Davis.

The cultural influence of the 60's/70's music and the Movement's key figures can still be seen today - from their styles, philosophy and politics. Erykah Badu, who features in BLACK POWER MIXTAPE, has long been associated with a proud afro- centricity coupled with determined feminism - in a male dominated music industry. This mirrors the movement's figureheads such as Angela Davis and Kathleen Cleaver. Other female artists in contemporary music carry on this message of black pride such as India Arie, Jill Scott and the acclaimed rapper, singer-songwriter Lauryn Hill.

For a brief moment in time, a few daring, innovative musicians stood at the crossroads of a revolution in music and culture. Across one of the most turbulent periods in American history -they brought music, medium and message together as never before, composing a soundtrack perfectly tuned to the tempo and pulse of its time and has echoed through the passages of time to today's contemporary rap artists working across the U.S and U.K and still representing a grass roots movement for change and empowerment.

We are also joined by writer, broadcaster and activist DARCUS HOWE who will be answering questions by LISA BENT. There will also be an opportunity for the audience to ask Darcus questions in the Q&A session after the screening.

More About Darcus Howe...
'Writer, Broadcaster and Activist; Trinidadian born Darcus Howe moved to America in the 1960s, where he was involved in grass-roots activism and witnessed some of the most defining moments in the struggle for racial justice in the US. After moving to the UK in the early 1970s, he joined the British Black Panthers - the first Black Panther organization outside the US, and came to public attention as one of the Mangrove Nine, to protest against police raids of the Mangrove restaurant. In 1981 he organized a 20,000-strong "Black People's March" in protest at the handling of the investigation into the New Cross Fire, in which 13 black teenagers died.

In recent years, he is known for his social commentary - particularly that of the 2011 Riots and television shows, 'White Tribe,' and 'Son of Mine.' He also writes columns for The New Statesman and The Voice."

London Short Film Festival 2012

Last Friday saw the opening launch of the 9th London Short Film Festival. Renowned for its daring cross-arts programming and showcasing the very best of the country's raw talent, this festival is a mecca for the UK's young creative talent and a significant date in the UK film calendar. The festival continues until Sunday 15th January so do not despair, you have time to check out some of the events and screenings that are still to come in the eclectic programme. For those of you who are more sonically stimulated, we've picked out some of the music related events that you should go and check out...

FRIDAY 13TH JANUARY 7.30pm HACKNEY PICTUREHOUSE ATTIC
Branchage Soundtracks... Serafina & Sam Steer - This Side of the Moon
Originally commissioned for the 2011 Branchage Jersey Film Festival, LSFF present the London premiere of harpist and songwriter Serafina Steer and animator Sam Steer’s performance, inspired by Kenneth Anger’s 1950 short film Rabbit’s Moon.

In their bizarre, astounding new animation, Postman’s Familiar, the Steer brother and sister team have re-interpreted the archetypal characters of Anger's avant-garde clown fantasy. Anger’s original soundtrack features mainly doo-wop pop, juxtaposed against his surreal, classical, silent take on 'commedia dell'arte'.

Serafina Steer (Stolen Recordings) creates a live sonic interpretation of this mythical story, using the new sound of 'psychedelic harp'. There will be a programme of classic and recent animations, including other Steer brother and sister collaborations.

SATURDAY 14TH JANUARY 7.30pm THE HORSE HOSPITAL
Analogue Kingdom feat.. OHMMM & Sculpture
Sculpture perform unstable modular collage. An incautious amalgam of mutant electronic forms, mechanical and digital animation techniques, computer sequencing and analogue tape edits, the avant-garde and looney tunes. Dan Hayhurst plays computer, reel-to-reel tape recorder, sampler, effectron and walkman. Reuben Sutherland plays video zoetrope record deck.
The result is a kaleidoscopic sensory overload, process revealed to the audience, experimental yet filled with a deranged sense of joy.

OHMMM (Orchestra of Home Made Musical Machines) are an Art Noise Band consisting of 6 artists who build and perform a collection of home made musical machines that are contained within an instrument case of fixed dimensions.

For LSFF, OHMMM will be performing a live improvised score to a specially commissioned 30 min 'Noise-Umentary' about the band Jazz Kunst.

SUNDAY 15TH JANUARY 7.30pm THE LEXINGTON
Branchage Soundtracks... Teeth Of The Sea - Reaper
Teeth Of The Sea, London's most intrepid and adventurous psychedelic rock band, have always looked to the extraordinary and outlandish for inspiration, and have been as influenced by books and films as by music.

Some of their biggest influences are the films of Neil Marshall, with films like Dog Soldiers and The Descent both leaving their marks on the band's psyche. But by far the closest to the band's collective heart is Doomsday, the hyper-real, volatile and audacious 2008 Frankenstein's monster of a movie that follows a perilous journey to the maws of Armageddon.

In 2011 the band have decided to offer a re-imagining of the movie: the result, Reaper (named after the movie's killer virus), is a kind of psychedelic reconfiguration of the film; something truly original and nightmarishly thrilling.

New Year, New Exhibition

DIFFERENT WAYS FOR DIFFERENT DAYS - An Exhibition By Jeb Loy Nichols

Musician, writer and artist Jeb Loy Nichols is currently exhibiting new and recent work at Rough Trade East through the month of January. The exhibition includes woodcuts from his recent series of Jazz and Hip-Hop portraits. The portraits, inspired by Nichols' residency in New York in the late 70's and early 80's, feature, among others, Gil Scot Heron, Africa Bambatta, Eric Dolphy, Ornette Coleman, and KRS-1. Also included are new wood cuts and prints focusing on his life in rural Wales.

Jeb's exhibition will be on display at Rough Trade East until Sunday 5th February.

Jeb's latest album "The Jeb Loy Nichols Story" was Rough Trade's Album of The Month for December and comes with an exclusive bonus disc. More information on that here.

We Have Band are three friends. Darren Bancroft plus husband and wife duo Thomas and Dede Wegg-Prosser met whilst working at a record label, left to form a band, play Glastonbury, release an album that was critically acclaimed by everyone from NME to Dazed & Confused and tour the world. So far, so good!

A stylistic leap on from their debut album, the second entitled ‘Ternion” due for release in January is an intensely personal album that manages to be both uplifting and melancholic.

We Have Band have announced their upcoming 2012 tour, but will give a special French premiere of their new songs in the Rough Trade Shop on the 13th of December.

WEDNESDAY 14th DECEMBER

7pm JARVIS COCKER presents his book “Mother, Brother, Lover”

To celebrate the launch of his new book Jarvis Cocker will be talking about and reading from 'Mother, Brother, Lover', at Rough Trade On Tour chez agnès b.

Widely regarded as one of the most gifted lyricists of his age, and a funny, wry, tender and insightful observer of the human condition in all its minute and arch glory. Jarvis Cocker's first collection of selected lyrics will be presented by the man himself using PowerPoint and followed by a signing session.

THURSDAY 15th DECEMBER

7pm SBTRKT (DJ SET)
SBTRKT is no stranger to writing, recording and releasing music. To date he's had multiple releases on Brainmath, Numbers, Ramp, Monkeytown and now home label Young Turks. Add to that reworkings of Radiohead and Goldie, and remixes of Modeselektor... However, this is his first full-length album. "This release is the culmination of a longer period of constant writing and collaboration, tracks on previous EPs were written as singular pieces. This record is much more of a whole project, more representative of my thoughts and ideas as an artist and each track was completed with the aim to be coherent together."

SBTRKT's debut album pulls off a series of impressive feats: it's bursting with fresh ideas, and yet it sounds immediately familiar. It's sound-patterns and rhythms can easily soundtrack the ecstatic hands in the air dance floor moments as well as reliving the monotony of the morning commute. Its influences are incorporated with subtlety and sophistication: dense enough to interpret, light enough to dance to.

On THURSDAY 8th DECEMBER from 6pm until 10pm, Rough Trade East is hugely excited to invite you to our inaugural Christmas Market. As Christmas is a time for seeing old friends, we’ve invited a VERY select guestllst of boutique vendors to come down for the night, help the party go off with a bang, and give you a unique opportunity to chat to the people behind your favourite products.

Rough Trade on Tour - Winter Collection will focus on the best albums of 2011, Rough Trade's Album of The Year and a typical Rough Trade edit of only the very best new music on vinyl and CD plus an eclectic selection of Christmas gifts and stocking fillers.

A NIGHT OF WEIRD BOOKS, LIVE SCREEN-PRINTING, INTERESTING MUSIC & OTHER THINGS.

To celebrate the release of "Own Label", Jonny Trunk and graphic partnership Fuel will be in store on Tuesday 22nd November. This partnership has produced some interesting books over the years, from the first ever study of Music Library LP art to rubber fetish wear and now an overview of Sainsbury's Own Label packaging designs from the 60s to the 70s.

Fuel are also well known for their Russian Criminal Tattoo Encyclopedias, and Jonny Trunk runs Trunk Records, possibly the UK's most peculiar record label.

On the night Fuel Publishing books will be available, Jonny will be Djing, signing books and possibly fending off amorous advances from both men and women alike. They have also organised a screen printer for the evening and will be producing and releasing a one off T shirt / poster as an exclusive to Rough Trade for one night only. There will also be special pre-release copies of the next Trunk album available. We can barely contain ourselves!

THE MOON AND THE SLEDGEHAMMER is a film about a family of real people: Mr Page; his two sons Jim and Peter; and his two daughters, Kathy and Nancy. Mrs Page died long ago. The Pages live in a ramshackle house situated in six acres of woodland, which they own themselves, in the heart of the commuter-belt, 20 miles south of London. The trees cut the Pages off completely from the outside world, and isolated in their island-clearing, they let the 20th Century slowly pass them by. It is a simple life without running water, electricity or gas. Peter and Jim earn what little money the family needs by doing casual repairs to tractors and farm-machinery in the neighbourhood. Machinery is the permanent obsession of Mr Page and his sons.

Pat Graham - Instrument

One of next month's exhibitions is by photographer Pat Graham entitled 'Instrument'. It will be displayed in the shop from Tuesday 1st November running for two weeks until 15th November and will feature images from Pat's book of the same name.

On the opening night, Pat will discuss the process and stories behind the project that spanned 15 years in the making. Including tours with bands The Cribs and Modest Mouse, visits to the musicians homes, and studios, etc. Many of the UK based musicians will be on hand along with Pat to celebrate the release of Instrument. The night will include an exhibition of some of the best shots in the series as well as proofs from the book. Listening stations will be set up with the songs that go with the photos. So come and join us for this night of Sound and Vision. Books will be signed and prints will also be available.

In the mid nineties while living in Washington DC music photographer Pat Graham photographed Ian Mackaye (Fugazi, Dischord Records) and his iconic white Gibson SG. At that point his photo project Instrument was born. Over the next 15 years Graham documented/photographed and interviewed 50 plus musicians about there favourite instrument and the stories that went along with them.

Mother, Brother, Lover by Jarvis Cocker

Jarvis Cocker is widely regarded as one of the most original and memorable lyricists and performers of the last three decades. Mother, Brother, Lover (his first book) is a collection of seventy lyrics, selected and annotated by the author.

Opening with an essay on the art of lyric-writing, the selection features Pulp classics such as 'Common People', 'Babies' and 'This is Hardcore', as well as less familiar and unreleased songs. Spanning thirty years of songwriting, the collection reveals a unique sensibility: a sometimes visceral, sometimes everyday take on love, relationships and the things we do to each other when the lights get low.

Mother, Brother, Lover takes the reader on a tour into the life, art and preoccupations of one of the great British artists of the late twentieth century. Shocking, sharp, clever and funny, it is a beautiful, enduring collection.

There will be a super limited edition version of the book. 100 copies at £100 each. It will contain a bookmark made from an individual strip of passport photos. Faber & Faber recently announced an expansion of their relationship with Jarvis Cocker, as he is appointed Editor-at-Large. Cocker will work closely with Lee Brackstone and Hannah Griffiths in a broad commissioning role. Cocker's appointment echoes the role famously played by Pete Townshend in the 1980s at Faber.

NICKY WIRE IN CONVERSATION WITH DORIAN LYNSKEY

To celebrate the launch of his new book 'Death Of A Polaroid' - A Manics Family Album, Nicky Wire will be in conversation with Dorian Lynskey, author and Guardian music critic.

Documenting more than twenty years of the band's career, Nicky Wire has kept a personal visual history of the Manic Street Preachers' various evolutions and travels across the world, right from their early beginnings in Blackwood, Wales. Nicky will discuss his passion for polaroid photography and the history of the iconoclastic band, and take part in a book signing following the Q&A.

The event, brought to you by Faber & Faber in association with the Guardian, will be hosted here at Rough Trade East on Wednesday 16 November.

An exhibition of Nicky's own polaroids will also be on display in the shop from 16th - 30th November.

ADJAYE. AFRICA. ARCHITECTURE.

One of the world's most exciting young architects, David Adjaye has built acclaimed houses, commercial and public buildings all over the world and is coming to Rough Trade East to discuss his new book "Adjaye. Africa. Architecture."

Rough Trade East will be hosting an event entitled "An evening with David and Peter Adjaye" on Monday 17th October at 6pm.

Join David and Peter Adjaye for conversation, images and sound from their new collaborative project.

Over a ten-year period, the architect David Adjaye has visited 53 major African cities and photographed thousands of buildings, sites and places that few of us will ever be able to visit.

Now he shares his observations in a new book. It documents Adjaye's tribute to African metropolitan architecture. The individual volumes present cities according to the terrain in which they are situated - the Maghreb, Desert, The Sahel, Savanna and Grassland, Mountain and Highveld, and Forest.

In conjunction with this project, his brother, Peter Adjaye, has curated the African Metropolitan Music Compilation that explores some of the most significant styles of African music across these geographical zones .

David Adjaye will introduce the project and talk about his journey. Peter Adjaye will then respond. This will be followed by a book signing and a DJ set showcasing the African Metropolitan Music Compilation.

Fires and Fanzines from Caught By The River

We've got a couple of things to mention on the Caught By The River side of things.

Firstly, Caught By The River's book of the month is now on sale here at Rough Trade East along with their eclectic selection of books on nature and culture.

October's chosen title is Fire Season: Field Notes From A Wilderness Lookout by Philip Connors.
For five months of every year Philip Connors quits the city and becomes a fire lookout. Connors had me fascinated as he tells what he sees from his observation tower in New Mexico’s Gila wilderness and joins the dots between Aldo Leopold and Jack Kerouac with a subtle nod to Thoreau – “Every day in a lookout is a day not subtracted from the sum of one’s life.”

Xerox – A Celebration Of Fanzine Culture From The 70s To Now

Time and again, we’ve found ourselves saying that Caught By The River is like a fanzine. As longtime fanzine readers, writers and buyers, it makes total sense that there would be something lo-fi and DIY deep inside us; an ever present and excitable urgency to pass on newly learnt information to as many people as possible.
Earlier this year, we decided to join the dots between our site and some of the grassroots mags that had been inspirational to us by holding Tales From The Typographic Ocean, a symposium at Port Eliot Festival to discuss the roots of the UK’s underground press. Our very good friend Emma Warren (formerly of Jockey Slut) hosted a panel that featured Rough Trade’s Geoff Travis, Elektra record’s biographer Mick Houghton and ZigZag man Andy Childs. Tripping back to the late 60s, the talk moved onto punk rock and beyond, painting a kaleidoscopic picture of a time before today’s heavily sponsored, focus grouped music press.
Back in the Smoke, we thought it was something worth revisiting. On Weds October 12th, we’re staging a second fanzine panel. We’re calling it Xerox. This time it’ll go beyond punk, taking in C86, acid house and a whole bunch more. Stormtroopers Arrive At Rough Trade

Rough Trade East has become exclusive UK retailer of Andrew Ainsworth’s Original Stormtrooper range of replica helmets.

Andrew Ainsworth, prop designer of the iconic figures, recently won a Supreme Court ruling against George Lucas, allowing him the right to sell replicas (outside of the US) made using his original designs.

Andrew says, "I'm very excited to be working with Rough Trade, a wonderfully inspiring independent retailer whose roots, like mine, go back to the mid-70's. Rough Trade East is the perfect modern environment to appreciate my work, given its joyous celebration of all things independently creative."

... so we've got a load of new poetry bits in the café over at East, and all available online as well. Here's everything you need to get your poetic kicks this weekend...

Firstly, we have the truly beautiful Faber Romantics set. All the poets you need, with great new selections from the likes of Andrew Motion, Paul Muldoon and Fiona Sampson. Keats, Blake, Clare (my personal favourite) et al all exquisitely packaged in hardback form with a design nod to Josiah Wedgewood. Get the whole set. Seriously.

Secondly, we have two new books from two of the most exciting poets currently working...

Daljit Nagra's latest is a kaleidoscopic, pan-cultural masterpiece; deftly blending linguistic and cultural tropes to create an exhilarating, humming melting pot. This book becomes city itself. The whole world in fact.

And then, out today, the elegant, rich and sometimes harrowing new book from Alice Oswald. A meditative, distilled translation of the "atmosphere" of Homer's Iliad, Oswald has turned the great narrative epic into a bittersweet, elegiac jeremiad. Richard's one man play Skittles has just finished a very successful run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Katie is currently writing a new play for the theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds.

Nudging our regular monthly night to a Friday evening, comedian and playwright Tom Basden will be back in action, with Sam Taradash and some very special guests. Barry Walsh is a born Londoner. His novel, ‘The Pimlico Kid’ (soon to be published by Harper Collins), is a tragicomedy about growing up in central London in the 60s. Fluttering somewhere between theatre, comedy and performance art, and renowned for his inquisitive wonder, Radio Four star Julian Fox joins the Special Relationship.

And your Friday night doesn't need to stop there, we'll be going into the early hours with THE DIXIE TICKLERS ft. GUSTAVE ANDREW DJ SET (WAX COTTON). The Dixie Ticklers are one of the UK's most respected acoustic bands. They are transforming and revisiting classic New Orleans music. These guys are so hot that even New Orleans enthusiast Woody Allen has a copy of their album.

PHOTOMONTH - East London's International Photography Festival 2011

Last Thursday was the official opening of Photomonth 2011 East London's international photography exhibition.

The Opening Exhibition this year is a retrospective of Phil Maxwell's work entitled "Forty Years On - A photographic journey from the 70's to the present. "

Celebrating 40 years of Phil Maxwell’s work and its archiving for public use by the Bishopsgate Institute, the exhibition takes you on a journey through his youth in Liverpool to his later life in the East End of London. Housed in two venues - the Bishopsgate Institute and here at Rough Trade East – you can walk between the two buildings and experience the vibrancy of the East End first hand.
This is the East End seen through Phil Maxwell’s lens - his backdrop and canvas against which he’s captured sketches of life, documenting an instant in time and the social conditions and history of his community.

Rough Trade East also plays host to another exhibition in conjunction with Photomonth by Constantine Gras entitled "Vinyl Replay."

Vinyl Replay is a unique visual exploration of Constantine's record collection. In the studio and on location, he used long exposures, often with a camera in motion, to reinterpret his dusty and scratched vinyl records. These records range from 1966 when the Beach Boys filtered across his mum's amniotic sac, up until his last days of active vinyl collecting from Mole Jazz in the early 1990's.

"I want to re-invoke the space and time of this analogue existence: early days of collective family listening; rushing down to Woolworth's with pocket money to buy singles; the flowering of sexual identity in post-punk teens; and the outrage and civil disobedience against Thatcherite Britain."

On display until 31st October at Rough Trade East.

Other highlights of the festival include an exhibition of works by Carole Suety on display from Thursday 6th October at agnès b on Lamb Street. Carole explores relationships through the appropriation of an old French tradition of keeping a bell jar to preserve the memories of married life.

One of our favorite local boozers The Carpenter's Arms are displaying the works of Andrew Grainger. This is Andrew's first solo exhibition after having removed himself from nearly a decade of photographing the fast paced industry of fashion and advertising, he has rediscovered his passion for photography by capturing the reality and spontaneity of his surroundings in his body of work "What's The Brief."

CAUGHT BY THE RIVER LAUNCHES AT ROUGH TRADE EAST

This weekend sees the launch of Caught By The River at Rough Trade East. The nature-writing website will be getting it's own section on our bookshelves offering an eclectic selection of books on fishing, nature, music, pubs and more, as well as various Caught By The River merchandise.

Each month there will also be a Caught By The River event taking place in the shop. The first one is taking place on Wednesday 21st September at 6.30pm with a Q&A introducing folk to the history and background of the website. John Andrews (who, along with letter writing partner, Dexter Petley, is the longest running contributor to the site) will host, chatting with Robin, Andrew and Jeff, before reading his chapter from the latest anthology, On Nature. Another contributor to On Nature , Bill Drummond, will be along along to read from his chapter, ‘On The Road To Damascus’.

An after party will be held in the nearby craft beer and real ale bar Mason and Taylor with guest DJs and the best beers anywhere in town.

This set will contain one of Nicky Wire's personal polaroids in a presentation case, signed by him. Each book is bound in cloth, with h and t bands, silver foil endpapers and with limitation page signed and numbered.
The portfolio in the set will be covered in cloth with silk ties and contains the mount board with the polaroid affixed and numbered. The first of two titles by the Manic Street Preachers' bassist and lyricist, Nicky Wire.

Last night was the opening of September's exhibition at Rough Trade East... 'Quark, Strangeness and Charm'- a show by Robert Rubbish

Robert Rubbish, co-founder of 'Le Gun Magazine' and one half of Victorian Punk Revivalists 'The Rubbishmen' presents his latest solo exhibition of drawings and paintings based on facial hair, cosmic space rock, and apocryphal record covers.

A number of portraits on display of musicians who famously sported facial hair. The said facial hair being acquired from joke shops. Robert is inspired a lot by these comedy emporiums and calls some of his work 'JOKE SHOP POP ART'.

The apocryphal record covers will represent Robert's desire to find albums that he has been searching for for years such as the complete works of Egyptian Ska or the greatest hits from the cosmic toilet.

Issue zero of Robert's new zine 'LOS PISTOLOS' - a low tech publication with a punky London Mexican vibe heavily influenced by underground comics and punk zines of yesteryear will be in by the weekend so come by and have a look at the pictures on the wall and buy a copy of the zine whilst you're here.

This Sunday 17th July, End of the Road Festival & Rough Trade Shops are curating the bandstand for the annual 'Swap & Share' picnic at Arnold Circus in Shoreditch.
So, if you're in London and at a loose end - bring a picnic to share, something to swap & a love story to tell!

The picnic has always been very much a community event bringing together local families with the more recent inhabitants of Shoreditch. People make and bring food to share. There are free activities for all ages - artists's portraits, paper hat making, dancing, cycle racing, a miniature clay picnic, musical cherry stone spitting, a pop-up exhibition of children's illustrated poems, a table top museum, Thaumatropes, ping pong and a Playmobil trading stand...

Here's a little taster of what you can expect to hear on the day from The Head & The Heart...

The day is organised by The Friends Of Arnold Circus, a registered charity formed in London’s Shoreditch in spring 2004 through local voluntary action. The historic bandstand and gardens at the heart of Arnold Circus had fallen into disrepair and were widely seen as dirty and threatening. A small group of local people set about to rescue this unique part of the East End’s heritage, and to re-establish it as a resource for all. By spring 2006, membership had risen to 450 and our events – from brass band concerts to an annual Carrom championship – were attracting over 300 people to each. In 2011, membership had risen to 550, and the Friends had taken over management of part of the site from the Council.

It really is a lovely space and worthwhile charity, so get down there on Sunday and support the cause.

Heavenly signing, The Head and the Heart will be spending July in the UK and there are plenty of chances to catch them live, but tickets will go fast so get yours now. All tour dates can be found here.

Rough Trade West will be hosting a FREE acoustic in-store gig on Monday 18th July so get down there before their plugged in gig at Bush Hall later on in the evening.

The Head and The Heart debut album is a favourite in the RT shops and comes highly recommended by Rough Trade West's Director/Manager Nigel House, who says it's his Album Of The Year so far. Nigel found it extremely difficult to choose one track for his appearance on Domino Radio a few weeks back because every track is so damn good!

If you're in Hoxton Square any time between now and 10th August go and check out the new Neal Fox exhibition 'Beware Of The God'.

Fox’s drawings depict a phantasmagoric journey through the detritus and mythology of pop culture and takes many of the recurring subjects of his drawings and portrays them through the medium of the stained glass window. Fox has produced a set of twelve 2.5 metre high stained-glass windows; exhibited in a single room - an alternative church of alternative saints.

In these windows you will see Albert Hoffman take a psychedelic bicycle ride above the LSD molecule, J.G. Ballard dissecting the world, Johnny Cash wrangling his demons and more...

I'll Be Your Mirror

On the weekend of 23rd and 24th July 2011 at the stunning Alexandra Palace, London, All Tomorrow's Parties will present the first UK I'll Be Your Mirror event, which will be curated by the mercurial Portishead and ATP. Acting as sister events to the world famous ATP Festivals which usually take place in holiday resorts, and named after the b-side to The Velvet Underground's original All Tomorrow's Parties 7" single, I'll Be Your Mirror will be a new series of artist curated music, film and art events taking place in cities worldwide. In what promises to be an incredible two days of the best music, art and film in the Capital.

Portishead will headline both nights, with a different stunning support line-up joining them each day. Other acts include PJ Harvey, Factory Floor, Grinderman, Caribou, S.C.U.M., Swans and the newly reformed Company Flow.

Fitting in. Standing out. is the next installment from London based artist and photographer Stacey Yates as she further explores her interest in identity through an unlikely subject matter - coffee stirrers.

'Coffee stirrers don't get much of our attention. They aren't particularly necessary. We use them for a matter of seconds and then discard them. I wanted to give them some oxygen and use them to bring something much bigger to the surface that concerns us all .'

Stacey came across Jake's collection of coffee stirrers a year back and has been making images of them in isolation for the past few months. Don't miss out on your chance to see Stacey's images as she uses coffee stirrers as a vehicle to explore identity.

We've just had another batch of the brilliant short collection Story The Flowers from regular Brian Eno collaborator, poet Rick Holland. If you haven't seen this in the shop, it's a succinct, poetic distillation of life in and around London, with a palpable sense of travel, place and a unique and deft handling of voice it's a beautiful little collection.
Rick and Brian Eno's recorded collaboration, 'Drums Between The Bells, is set for release in July, so stay tuned for that, as well.

That's right, the Japanese noise merchants Bo Ningen renowned for their powerful psychedelic live onslaughts are performing live at Rough Trade Warehouse Party at Red Gallery this Friday 8th April.

You can hear the past in their wall of sound and massive melodies, but the past re-imagined - from Butoh to Black Sabbath. They update the j-rock template with elements of kraut-rock, metal, hardcore and funk scratched all over it.

Caribou's 2010 release 'Swim' was Rough Trades album of the year with good reason. Dan's DJ sets take you on a journey through all manner of styles & textures, they're something special to behold.

Kutmah (DJ Set)

DJ Kutmah aka Justin McNulty is a veteran of the L.A. Beats Scene and a key figure in the Dublab / Low End Theory / Brainfeeder creative community. Kutmah's DJ sets could include anything from his own unique slabs of Hip Hop fuzz, rare Egyptian Funk to hot off the press exclusives from his L.A. friends all guaranteed to raise the roof.

Cloaks (DJ Set)

To say that Cloaks are swimming against the tide would be something of an understatement; as opposed to offering the listener a breath of fresh air, they have created a sound so dense it's closer to giving them a boot to the face. With their billowing bass and shredded metallic clanks, leading to apt comparisons of Trent Reznor performing through Jah Shaka's stacks.

Action Beat (Live)

Action Beat is an improvised Noise / No-Wave punk band, heavily inspired by early Sonic Youth, The Ex, Glenn Branca and other avant guitar ensembles. When it comes to Action Beat, improvisation is the operative word, although the band comprises a core of around five musicians, their cast can expand to as many as fourteen for their live shows. A normal gig will have at least three guitarists, a bassist and more often than not four drummers. Intense energy from start to finish.

Having worked in the murky music and fashion industries for over 10 years as an art director, graphic designer and illustrator, Dominic Thomas can never be accused of being one-dimensional in his approach to design. From his seminal sleeve designs for 'Kings Of Convenience' to his subversive adverts for Adidas, his un-formulatic and spontanious ideas have resulted in a compelling, diverse portfolio.

'Paraphernalia' is an opportunity to view Dom Thomas' art works from the last few years, a myriad of ideas and processes in a wonderous, colourful presentation of his archive. Featuring his personal highlights including new and unseen works...

The driving force behind his work is to challenge, avoid being pigeon-holed or constrained to one medium. He seeks constant addition to his repertoire - dreaming of emulating the dynamic visuals of key movements from the past. There is always a thread throughout his work, experimenting with classic design elements and warping them into an idiosyncratic retro/future house-style. His most iconic works have materialised in the music industry, where he has produced sleeves designs for artists such as Badly Drawn Boy, Future Kings Of Spain and Cherrystones..

You will see his work from time to time, probably not relating the image in front of you with his other surreptitious designs.

As well as his continuing progression as a designer and music producer he finds time to run "Finders Keepers", a record label specializing in re-issuing world music with long time friend and associate Andy Votel. Together they design and package the sleeves lovingly, in the hope that these, as well as the music, will become artifacts in their own right.

This exhibition doubles up as a celebration of the launch of 'Miscellaneous Mutant Mishaps', Dom Thomas' first release on the embryonic 'Brutal Music' label. A breathtaking musical collage mutating his artwork aesthetic into an exotic, sonic soundscape. Blurring passages from protest fueled France with politically-sensitized Turkish psychedelic beats: schizo Spanish sci-fi soundtracks together with scorching Lollywood club bangers - all lovingly distilled with liquified dreams of proto-Hacienda anthems. A mysterious, beaten-up global jukebox taking you to the dancefloor and beyond...

Two parts ballsy females and one part fantasy geek, This Is Music's London metal three piece Invasion are set to release their debut album later this year. Following their debut single release at the beginning of the month, we had a quick chat with guitarist Marek about metal dedication.

So Marek, how would you summarise Invasion's musical output?

Myself and the drummer are just trying to be as heavy as we can with our limited musical tools! We just love heaviness, we pretty much exclusively listen to metal.

What are your shows like?

Despite our interest and dedication to metal, we find it quite hard to break into that scene. We tend to get more ‘hipster’ shows but we find it so much better when we’re playing to metal kids.

So what would be your dream show?

We supported The Sword last year and that was a dream! We hung out with them recently and they took us to see Metallica.

The new video for your single is insane! Who produced it?

This guy called Hans Lo, he's super nice and recently graduated from Camberwell. We wanted something fantasy and occult themed and he compiled us the video out of film clips.
