( ( ( ( ( ( DOM THOMAS EXHIBITION ) ) ) ) ) )
Original art works from the archive of Dom Thomas.
'Paraphernalia' - running for a month from 9th October 2009 at the Rough Trade East store in London.
* Launch party featuring live in-store DJ set @ 7pm, 9th October*
'Miscellaneous Mutant Mishaps' is released on 21st September 2009 on Brutal Music, on CD and Limited Edition vinyl.
Exclusive merchandise available on the night.
Having worked in the murky music and fashion industries for over 10 years as an art director, graphic designer and illustrator, Dominic Thomas can never be accused of being one-dimensional in his approach to design. From his seminal sleeve designs for 'Kings Of Convenience' to his subversive adverts for Adidas, his un-formulatic and spontanious ideas have resulted in a compelling, diverse portfolio.
'Paraphernalia' is an opportunity to view Dom Thomas' art works from the last few years, a myriad of ideas and processes in a wonderous, colourful presentation of his archive. Featuring his personal highlights including new and unseen works...
The driving force behind his work is to challenge, avoid being pigeon-holed or constrained to one medium. He seeks constant addition to his repertoire - dreaming of emulating the dynamic visuals of key movements from the past. There is always a thread throughout his work, experimenting with classic design elements and warping them into an idiosyncratic retro/future house-style. His most iconic works have materialised in the music industry, where he has produced sleeves designs for artists such as Badly Drawn Boy, Future Kings Of Spain and Cherrystones..
You will see his work from time to time, probably not relating the image in front of you with his other surreptitious designs.
As well as his continuing progression as a designer and music producer he finds time to run "Finders Keepers", a record label specializing in re-issuing world music with long time friend and associate Andy Votel. Together they design and package the sleeves lovingly, in the hope that these, as well as the music, will become artifacts in their own right.
This exhibition doubles up as a celebration of the launch of 'Miscellaneous Mutant Mishaps', Dom Thomas' first release on the embryonic 'Brutal Music' label. A breathtaking musical collage mutating his artwork aesthetic into an exotic, sonic soundscape. Blurring passages from protest fueled France with politically-sensitized Turkish psychedelic beats: schizo Spanish sci-fi soundtracks together with scorching Lollywood club bangers - all lovingly distilled with liquified dreams of proto-Hacienda anthems. A mysterious, beaten-up global jukebox taking you to the dancefloor and beyond...

INVASION
Two parts ballsy females and one part fantasy geek, This Is Music's London metal three piece Invasion are set to release their debut album later this year. Following their debut single release at the beginning of the month, we had a quick chat with guitarist Marek about metal dedication.
So Marek, how would you summarise Invasion's musical output?
Myself and the drummer are just trying to be as heavy as we can with our limited musical tools! We just love heaviness, we pretty much exclusively listen to metal.
What are your shows like?
Despite our interest and dedication to metal, we find it quite hard to break into that scene. We tend to get more ‘hipster’ shows but we find it so much better when we’re playing to metal kids.
So what would be your dream show?
We supported The Sword last year and that was a dream! We hung out with them recently and they took us to see Metallica.
The new video for your single is insane! Who produced it?
This guy called Hans Lo, he's super nice and recently graduated from Camberwell. We wanted something fantasy and occult themed and he compiled us the video out of film clips.
INVASION - Follow the Smoke / Conjure War from Marek Steven on Vimeo.
No Metal connoisseur is complete without a favorite release list, what would you say are your top 5 metal albums of all time?
Black Sabbath – Black Sabbath
Metallica – Kill ‘Em All
Sleep – Sleep’s Holy Mountain
Morbid Angel – Blessed are the Sick
Led Zepplin - II

Kap Bambino
We caught up with Caroline from kap bambino before their secret video shoot party for their new single 'Dead Lazers' released 18th May.
So Caro, how are the arrangements going for your video shoot? I hear you’re shooting in a carpark opposite The Old Blue Last?
Yeah, we start shooting at 8pm and are going on until 6am! We are really excited! It’s a party on the carpark roof, lots of people for the end bit! People are gonna act as different gangs with BMXs and skateboards!
What can we expect from the new album?
New tracks, new sounds, new experience and maybe the chance to get THE MEXICAN VIRUS. We wanted to push our limits for the second album; less vocal effects, more synth on the front, lot of broken synths, first time with mastering and couple of slower tracks…still bedroom recording as usual though.
Looks like you have a pretty grueling tour schedule around your album release
Yes! Excited for all the shows, great for the new album.
How was your in-store the other day?
Weird for us to play our first in-store! It was funny at the end, everyone in the shop and the staff are so nice.
So what else have you got coming up in the not too distant future?
Going to eat a pizza…and a UK tour in June!
I hope you enjoy your pizza. And the tour too, I suppose.
Mike Bones
So Mike, how have you found the response to your latest album so far?
Well, my friends seem to like it. My friend back home told me a song on the record made her cry, which I feel bad about - I apologized to her. People think the cover is weird and in bad taste.
How did find the album to write? It’s quite obviously a big step musically from your last release in terms of its arrangement.
We made it really quickly, in 4 days. I think that made the record seem unified and cohesive. We didn't have time to get all Radiohead on the songs. And who would want to do that either?
Do you have a vision of the songs in their entirety as you were writing them or did they evolve as you were making them?
I just work on them until they're done.
Is it quite a daunting experience baring your own material when you've spent time playing guitar with other people's music?
Not at all. It’s been pretty easy. The only thing that I’ve found strange about being a songwriter is that people always think you're singing about yourself…
Has that spawned any interesting misinterpretations of your music then?
People think I’m a dick. I think I present a really unlikable character in some songs.
Reviewers think I’m some kind of lothario with an awful voice.
That’s a very self-deprecating view of your media receipt! It doesn't look like you're too unloved…
I tend to only remember the bad things people say. Like a kid on the street called me bow-legged when I was 10 and I still remember it. That sort of thing y’know?
How do you feel the in-store yesterday went?
It was really nice. The people there were disarmingly polite. I get uncomfortable when the crowd is nice. I prefer drunks and hecklers.
What are your plans for the rest of this year?
I’m in the middle of making a record here in London right now. Touring here next month. Then more touring for the rest of the year in the states and back here. Trying to stay busy.
